Why we don't focus on dieting and weight loss....
At Relate.Nutrition, we don't endorse any diets or counting of foods/macros (unless medically appropriate) because it doesn't lead to long term weight loss nor is it a sustainable lifestyle. There isn't any "magic number" that will result in a change in how your body metabolizes food. We consider ourselves non-diet dietitians, so we typically help people to recover from the dieting lifestyle that they have been sucked into their whole lives. Helping clients focus on repairing their relationship with food (and their body) changes the mindset from “me vs. food/my body” to “me vs. diet culture”.
The reason we promote the non-diet message is that 95% of dieters gain their lost weight back and many gain more than they initially lost. There is a shift of metabolism that happens when you restrict intake, metabolism slows and most of the time never increases again, thus making it easier for your body to store calories as fat. For many, this is a lifelong change in metabolism. Another aspect that isn't always addressed is the psychological piece that is tied to dieting. It can be complex, and once people acknowledge all of the mixed and unhealthy messages that they have been fed throughout their lifetime they can start to rebuild the trust in their own body.
If you’re ready to ditch diet mentality and nurture your body the way it deserves, we are ready to help you discover your best relationship with food. Reach out to us for a free 15 minute phone consult to learn more.
